LHRC mentions Gender Violence as a hurdle towards equality in Tanzania PDF Print E-mail

Gender violence, early and child pregnancies, maternal mortality and morbidity have been sighted as some of the major reasons hindering efforts to achieve gender equality in Tanzania.

LHRC through its Executive Director Francis Kiwanga identified the reasons while issuing a press statement on March 8, 2010 to mark the International Women’s Day

“We as a Centre feel that the mentioned setbacks are mainly due to the system in place which deprives and denies women   opportunities.  This can only change if the government fulfils its duties by putting in place a system to increase the number of women in decision making positions.

The LHRC boss said the number of women in decision making position is small despite their 51%   in the country.

The following is the current number of women in power in Tanzania
1. Tanzania has 27 ministers out of which 7 are women.
2. There are 21 Deputy Ministers out of which 5 are women.
3. There are 24 Permanent Secretaries out of which 8 are women
4. There are 1,186 Directors out of which 133 are women
5. Tanzania has 155 deputy directors out of which 37 are women
6. The country has 32 ambassadors out of which 3 are women.
7. 69 Judges with 23 being women
8. 30.41% members of parliament are women while as 69.59% are men.

LHRC said it was not happy with the current trend saying the government ought to fulfill its promise as it had signed and ratified various international women’s rights instruments.
