The Petition on Death Penalty is one of the major cases filed by the Centre at the High Court of Tanzania. The Centre filed the case in collaboration with the SAHRINGON Tanzania Chapter and the Tanganyika Law Society with its goal being to press the government to abolish the death penalty.
Impact: The case and the media campaign by the Centre with its allies have helped to create a public debate with the government assigning the Law Reform Commission to seek views from the public. So far there have been no executions and the last execution took place in 1994. The issue to abolish or not is expected to be presented in the House for discussion on February next year. Some prisoners on death row recently received presidential pardon, a good sign on the campaign.
